"Blockade Billy" by Stephen King
Stephen King is not a good writer, in my opinion. He's got good stories, but he is horrible at actually writing. His novella "Billy Blockade" is no exception, but at least it's short so you don't have to endure the brutality of his bad writing beyond 112 pages. Full story...

Rarely does a novel surprise me, but Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper does just that. While this book would not be considered new (2004) it is worth seeking out for a first or even a second look. Kate was diagnosed with leukemia when she was a toddler and seems to always be on the brink of death.
