Attached Link: Detroit News story

Should or does it matter if the elected head of a failing school system's school board is effectively unable to put together a coherent written sentence? People like him, he's otherwise an affective leader (as affective as can be, I suppose, in a bankrupt school district like Detroit).

Would it matter if he were head of the city council? Would it matter if he were the head of a rich successful district?

What do you think?

I think it's disgraceful that this guy knew writing was not his strength, but still sent out mass emails without anyone proofreading them. Other than that, it sounds like he probably has a learning disorder, and shouldn't be faulted for that. I know lots of people who are horrible writers, but are still really good at what they do. Just because this guy can't write very well, doesn't mean he can't be an effective leader within the schools.

But still, dude, have someone edit your writing before sending it out. It makes the district and city look bad. Not to mention, is a poor example to the kids.

I think it's rather appropriate that a product of the Detroit Public School system is now the head of the school board, and also that he can't write for shit. He is pretty much the perfect representative of the district.

It is pretty shocking, Esp since there are so many programs that you can purchase to correct spelling and grammar mess ups.

I would be pretty upset for ANY leader for my community  be it  city, county, educator to show a lack of education.

In this FoxDetroit story it's noted that he has a learning disability, which doesn't seem like it should necessarily disqualify him from holding public office, especially if he's duly elected, and he's otherwise performing his duties well-- and DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb says he is.

Otis Mathis is a Navy vet, a Wayne State grad, he excelled in mathematics, he's run a non-profit...really does it matter if he's not able to write very well? It's not like he's teaching high school composition. If he were, then there'd be a problem.

I don't think he should be ridiculed for being a poor writer...he graduated from college & has a learning disability which caused him to have to spend more time in college & he didn't give up.  He's not an English teacher so what damn difference does it make?

I say that he just has someone proof his stuff before he sends it out...like any other boss would!

Serioulsy, who gives a rip if he can write or not? The DPS have bigger fish to fry than to make sure their school board president can write a clear memo or not. If he can lead, he should lead. Period.
