| 8/29/10 Dearborn inches closer to having an arts district
East side, west side or both sides? The question, right now it seems, isn't whether Dearborn will have an arts district, but rather where will Dearborn's art district be?
Earlier this summer, Artspace-- a Minneapolis-based real estate developer for the arts-- did a survey of Dearborn to see whether establishing affordable housing and workspace for artists could be sustained here. Representatives from Artspace met with city leaders, community leaders, business leaders and local artists. They also toured the area and looked at potential sites for artists lofts and studios (they typically refurbish already-abandoned properties).
Several weeks after their initial visit to Dearborn, Artspace issued a preliminary feasibility report, and right now it looks like things are going to move forward with this redevelopment project. What remains to be seen is where it will be, how big it will be, and how it will be funded. But the bottom line: This is huge for Dearborn. We could go from being known primarily as "Ford land" to being the go-to place for Bohemian-types in southeast Michigan.
And with Bohemian-types comes a new energy. Full story... Steve Veldheer - 5 opinions posted |
When you're looking for a good book, who has time to read? Your free time is valuable. And if you're like us, you like to spend your free time lost in a good book, not in a boring book review. So how do you find out what to read next? Check out our Books section (there's a permanent link in the navigation bar above).
We're compiling an easy-to-read list of "30-Second Book Reviews"-- reviews so concise and to-the-point you can read them in about a half-minute. If you don't like what you see with one review, you move right on to the next one.
Right now our list of reviews is short, but it'll be growing in the coming months. If you're interested in writing a 30-Second Book Review for us, drop us a line at editorial@theCounterProject.com. Full story...

8/27/10 Got Cornhole?
If you've been to a backyard barbecue, or a sports tailgate, or college party anywhere in the Midwest in recent years, chances are you've played-- or at least seen-- Baggo. Or Cornhole. Or Tailgate Toss. Or Corn Toss. Or Bean Bag Toss. Or Bags. Or Sacks and Wood. Or whatever else you want to call the game where players toss little corn-filled bags at a hole on an inclined wooden board.
It's the Horseshoes or Jarts of a new generation.
The origins of this backyard party game are somewhat murky. Some claim it was invented in western Cincinnati in the 1990s, others claim college students in Champaign, IL are responsible for its existence. Still others claim it was played in 14th century Germany, and rediscovered late last century in rural Kentucky.
So while you could debate the name and the history all night long, I'd rather grab a beer and start tossing some sacks. Here's what you need to get yourself ready. Full story... Jacob Miller - 2 opinions posted |
